— Kate Campos BookList

The Killing Tide is the first book in my Coastal Guardian series. My husband was Navy, so why am I writing about the Coast Guard? Because I think their mission to keep our waters and our country safe should be highlighted more. Before I started writing The Killing Tide, I’ll admit I knew little about the Coast Guard. I had a friend in high school who joined the Guard right after graduation, but that’s about the depth of my experience with them. Then, my husband and I watched a movie called The Finest Hour.

If you haven’t seen it, I highly urge you to. It’s the true story of one of the most dangerous and daring rescue attempts in Coast Guard history. Boatswain’s Mate First Class Bernie Webber takes a small team to rescue the crew of the Pendleton T2 oil tanker, which split in half off the coast of Cape Cod during a brutal nor’easter in 1952. I won’t ruin the ending for you, but let’s just say it’s a wonderful testament to courage in adversity. After watching it, I knew I had to write a series about the Coast Guard. I began researching and came across the Coast Guard Investigative Service and my interest was highly peaked. After talking with Coast Guardsmen, both newly in the service and those long retired, I began to see the story weaving together like a movie in my mind. I hope you enjoy reading the CGIS Wilmington teams’ adventures, cases and…of course, romances.

My Review of The Killing Tide:

I have been wanting to read Dani Pettrey’s books for a long time and am so glad I chose to start with this series. You are thrust into the action from the first page and continue with it until the last. She has a way of helping you want to get to know the characters on a deeper level and feel as though you connect with them. I was glad to see this was part of a series and look forward to the next one. This book is a good balance of characters, plot, suspense and mystery, all leaving the reader wanting more.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit but was not under any obligation to write a review. All opinions are strictly mine.

More from Robin

Hi, there. . .Robin here. I’m getting so excited for the release of my thirty-fourth novel, DEAD SILENCE. I have to say, I love this book. The heroine is strong, yet flawed. Her love for her son—willing to do anything to protect him is a mother’s instinct I relate to so well, having three daughters and two grandsons. The love of a mother for her child is so ingrained in me that I wanted to share that in a story.

I’ve been asked why I opted for a heroine who is an ASL translator and who has a deaf son. Many years ago, I became friends with someone who is deaf. She shared with me some of her frustrations, but also how her way of life is in comparison to mine. It got me to thinking that being deaf could be thought of as a disability but could also be used as an advantage…it was all in how you looked at it. My friend shared many stories of how she “eavesdropped” by reading lips and learned much about people and how they reacted to issues, enough that it led her into her career field today—a counselor, specializing in providing therapy for the hearing impaired as they live in a hearing world. I hope that I portrayed my characters in this positive light.

While I’m a Louisiana girl at heart, I reside in Little Rock, the capitol city for Arkansas. Since Bill and Hilary Clinton lived here and claimed it home before Bill was President, we have many political plans and posturing here. I saw it as a perfect backdrop for this particular story with the political undercurrents running rampant throughout the story.

I hope that you enjoy reading DEAD SILENCE as much as I enjoyed writing it.

My Review of Dead Silence:

This book was wonderful. I think it’s the first I’ve read from this author and it won’t be the last. She hooked me from the first page through to the end. I found myself thinking about the characters and wanting to read when I had to work, sleep, eat, parent – you get where I’m going. When I was younger, I learned some sign language and have a love for the deaf community. I can relate when the author talks about her friend eavesdropping on other’s conversations … I’ve done that myself sometimes, but it was with the use of sign language instead of reading lips. I think reading lips is difficult; I give a lot of credit to those who do it and do it well.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit but was not under any obligation to write a review. All opinions are strictly mine.

Spoken from the Heart: Taking it to the Next Level

Here’s a fun fact you might not have known about the Spoken from the Heart series. Two of its books were actually published by a small company in December 2012. They were sold under a different title: A 40-Day Habit Between Friends.

I’m so grateful for that experience. Without it, I don’t think God would’ve given me the confidence for our family to pursue self-publishing, and self-publishing is definitely a family ministry. The first book was republished as Spoken from the Heart: Taking it to the Next Level, in February 2014.

While this was officially the second book our family self-published, it was the first book of 32 devotions I wrote. The title actually came from a great friend of mine, the same talented woman who graciously took all the headshots I still use today. She kept telling me she was helping me “take it to the next level,” and that phrase stuck!

Taking it to the next level was significant for this book for a variety of reasons. It was during a period in my life when God was nudging me to take our relationship “to the next level,” which included our family taking our ministry “to the next level,” even though we had no idea what that meant. We chose to obey even though we didn’t have the complete map.

Every time I see the cover picture, I’m reminded of that summer and fall when God gave our family back the gift of taking regular hikes. At that time in our lives, God used that form of family exercise to help me take my physical health “to the next level” as well.

This book holds many great memories for me. That picture was taken during one of our regular Sunday afternoon hikes at our favorite park close to our house.

If you are exploring a relationship with God and want to “take it to the next level,” I’d like to invite you to start with this one. I would also suggest reading Spoken from the Heart: Digging Deeper directly following because it might bless you as well.

Have you ever been invited by God to “take (an area of your life) to the next level?” If so, what was it and how did you respond? Please share with the group by hitting reply. I’d love to continue this conversation with you.
