Reunited with Mother and Uncle, twelve-year-old Lauren and her younger brothers, Aiden and Ethan, must light the Tower of Light in Blooming Glen to save Zoura. But the enemy stands in their way. They need the lost Armor of God to overcome the forces of darkness.

As the children search for the armor, the enemy raises a new champion—their father. Knowing the power of the armor and the children’s plans, their father dispatches the Steele Brothers to retrieve the armor for the Dark One.

Zoura’s last chance for salvation will be lost, if darkness corrupts the armor before the children can take it back. Lauren, Aiden, and Ethan have prevailed against the forces of darkness before, but do they have the faith to stand firm against their father as he fights for the enemy?

About the Author

Allen Brokken is a teacher at heart, a husband and father most of all. He’s a joyful writer by the abundant grace of God. He began writing the Towers of Light series for his own children to help him illustrate the deep truths of the Bible in an engaging and age appropriate way.  He’s dedicated 15 years of his life to volunteer roles in children’s ministry and youth development.  Now that his own children are off to college he’s telling stories and sharing clean humor on social media @allenbrokkenauthor, and through his blog https://www.allenbrokkenauthor.com

More from Allen

Armor of God is the fourth book in the series, and it takes a significant departure from the others in that the children’s mother has joined them in their journey.  After rescuing her from the Iron Mountain in Fear No Evil, she is ready to take charge of the group to save Father.  However, things are a lot more complicated than they appear, and her children have grown used to making important decisions independently.

This book challenged my writing skills.  On the one hand, middle grade so often sends the parents away to give the kids agency to be the heroes of the story.  But what happens when the parents are active participants?  Most middle grade goes one of two directions. The parents are incompetent fools who the wise all knowing children must save, or the parents become wicked antagonists working against the children’s best interests.

As a parent, I cringe when those stereotypes come up in a read-aloud.  The parents I know are not bumbling fools and generally work hard to provide the best for their children.  So stories that emphasize something else tweaks something in my mind as I’m reading. After talking to a lot of parents, they feel the same way.

So I worked hard to give Mother a very specific objective, save Father. At the same time, the children have concerns that could take them off that path.  With the help of my editor and critique partners, I was able to cast Mother in a good light.  Armor of God provides readers a realistic portrayal of the family working through conflicts in a positive way, which makes the surprise ending all the more powerful.

So if you are looking for a middle-grade story to read to your kids where the parents aren’t bumbling fools or wicked abusers, you should check out Armor of God.

My Review of Armor of God:

I don’t usually read Christian YA, but this is a topic that is near and dear to our family’s heart. I figured if someone could break down the armor of God in a fun, creative way, that was a book I wanted my children to read. This book was part of a series and people who enjoy fantasy type books will love this series! I’m glad that it’s not just a single book, but part of a series for children (or adults) to devour.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit but was not under any obligation to write a review. All opinions are strictly mine.

Multi-Colored Christmas Tree Lights

All of my children are unique. One is quiet and reserved. Another is energetic and playful. The last is a combination of both – shy sometimes but with “eyes that tell a story.” They all share the traits of kindness, being responsible, thoughtfulness, and just generally being terrific kids. And I cannot forget their dad. Strong, level headed, a great sense of humor, compassionate, hardworking, and all around amazing are just a few traits that characterize him.

Would I want a family where everyone was exactly the same? Where we all shared the exact same characteristics and personality traits? No, I would not. I have a tendency to get bored easily so to have everyone exactly alike would not be very fun.

I like the diversity that comes with having a bigger family. My children share traits with both their father and I, but they also have traits that are uniquely theirs. That is such a blessing.

I compare our family with the multicolor strands of Christmas lights that are sold at the store. Each color is uniquely itself; some colors are a blend of two others (green is made up of blue and yellow), but each color combined with the others helps to create the final result. If one bulb is missing or broken, the entire strand is compromised. It is only when all the colors are working together, each in their own unique way, that the masterpiece is complete.

That is the way it is with our family. If one person is missing or tries to be someone they are not, our picture is broken. I would not change the shy, reserved, carefree, funny, energetic, playful, quiet, relaxed blend that makes up our own unique family.

So take time to celebrate and really embrace the wonderful qualities that make up your own family, making sure to tell each other how important he or she is, in his or her own special way, to your family as a whole.

Thanksgiving Weekend

Our family loves Thanksgiving weekend. A few years ago, we had some traditions we loved enjoying every single year. Now that kids have graduated and are juggling college and jobs, some of the traditions have had to be changed while others remain the same.

Wednesday morning, Thanksgiving Eve, our youngest had a half day of school while our daughter did not. We would drop him off, then come home and enjoy donuts, orange juice/coffee and a chick flick that no one else in the family wanted to watch.

The afternoon was spent baking, finishing up work, or generally getting ready for the long weekend together.

Thursday, Thanksgiving Day, was spent with family, but first we would eat donuts and watch the Thanksgiving Parade. Thursday night we would either start on our Black Friday shopping or simply enjoy being together watching TV and relaxing.

Friday, Black Friday, we would get up early as a family and go shopping. Sometimes we had a long list of what people would want; other years we bought a few things but mainly enjoyed the beginning of Christmas music, our yearly tradition of breakfast at McDonald’s and taking in the festive attitudes around us.

Friday afternoon (many years ago) would find me and our kids heading back to family’s house to bake and decorate Christmas cookies. Other years, after they had moved away, we would put up the Christmas tree, shop some more, or go back to bed.

Saturday was either putting up the Christmas decorations around the house or more shopping for others for Christmas.

Sunday we always head to church, then relax the rest of the afternoon getting ready for another busy week of work and school.

While our Thanksgiving weekends look a little different now, we still make time to spend with family and extended family as much as possible. We still use it to turn our hearts to Christmas and begin to celebrate the real reason for the season.

What about you? How did you spend Thanksgiving this year? What are some of your favorite traditions or memories?

Joy in the Littles

Last time we were together I spoke about finding joy in the big things in life – family, work, etc. However, what I’ve truly learned to embrace this past year is recognizing the joy in the little things. Here are some of my littles. Are they similar or very different from yours?

Looking, really looking at the sunrise. Each morning the colors and patterns are different. Realizing there are certain patterns and color schemes I enjoy more than others and being thankful for the variety and the chance to choose what I like best.

The moment to simply sit and read a book. Just because I want to and because I can.

To sit and really watch TV with my family. Instead of multitasking, taking time to listen to their laughter, conversation, the feel of my husband next to me and a puppy (or two) on my other side. To just be present.

Running errands with whoever wants to come along. Making up games to make the time more fun. Stopping for Icee’s or candy because we can, not because we have to.

Praying with my prayer partner. Sharing our life together – joys, sorrows, pain, blessings. Knowing we are joined together in Abba’s family.

Feeling the wind in my hair and the sun on my face.

The smell of rain.

The sound of birds and listening long enough to hear the different species.

The taste of my favorite donut, savoring each bite.

The smell and taste of my favorite flavor of coffee while I wrap my hands around my favorite cup for that day.

The way I feel after moving my body to work out.

Sitting and petting our dog. Seeing the way he turns himself inside out to find the most comfortable spot and then completely relaxing because he knows he’s safe and loved.

Watching both dogs play together at the dog park. That unbridled abandon of running without worry. Playing catch with the family while the dogs “get their energy out.”

Sitting quietly and listening for God to speak something intimate that He wants to communicate with only me. Sometimes waking up early in the morning for those conversations, sometimes having them after everyone leaves before starting my day. © Cheri Swalwell 2021

More from Beth

What’s going on with the Thatcher sisters?

Readers have asked me this question so often since The Best We’ve Been, the third and what I considered final book in the Thatcher Sisters Series, which released in May 2020. In the series, Payton, Jillian, and Johanna each had their moment center stage. Some readers told me they’d come to understand and, yes, even like older sister Johanna. Quite a feat, considering how she annoyed readers in book one, Things I Never Told You.

I ended the series with the trio of sisters in a good place – the best they’d ever been. The circumstances of their lives weren’t all tied off in nice, neat bows, but then real life isn’t like that, is it? And as the author, I was content to leave the sisters there and let readers imagine what happened next.

And then 2020 disrupted life for all of us. For me? Writing didn’t happen. I promised myself I would dive back into story in 2021. What better way than with a Christmas novella? So many readers love Christmas stories. And what better time to revisit Payton, Jillian, and Johanna and answer readers’ question: What’s going on with the Thatcher sisters?

I wasn’t sure myself. Part of the fun of writing is rediscovering well-known characters as you discover a new story. Set against the backdrop of Christmas? That was just an added blessing.

It’s been Christmas time for me throughout 2021 – a time to enjoy family traditions and face some unexpected changes. Welcome back to the Thatcher family!

My Review of Unpacking Christmas:

I had read the entire Thatcher series, so when I saw this novella, I had to read it. I was not disappointed! It had twists and turns, highs and lows, and I was able to see the growth of the sisters in their marriages, their own personal lives, and their sibling bond. It was a little sad seeing their parents age, and not have a strong faith (or any faith at all) but isn’t that how life goes? We don’t always get happily ever after endings all the time. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and hope the author continues to give us novellas from time to time to check in on the Thatcher family.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit but was not under any obligation to write a review. All opinions are strictly mine.

Joy in the Big

Joy in the Big

I started a blessing journal about four years ago which helps me say “thank You” and remember that every good thing I have comes from God. I’ve been mindfully trying to find joy in those things this year. Here are just a few:

Waking up next to my best friend every morning. Having a few extra minutes to share a laugh, pray together and cuddle before beginning our day. Sitting next to him on the couch, drinking a cup of delicious coffee while we watch the weather together for five minutes. It’s may be only five minutes but it’s time together before we both go our separate ways.

While I would welcome any child into our household, I’m blessed that God chose me to be the mother of these children. Taking a minute to truly appreciate each of their unique personalities, traits and gifts that make up “them.” Whether they still live in our home all the time or come home to visit, I treasure the times we have together to make new memories.

Joy in the excitement that comes from welcoming a new puppy into the family. We have been waiting for this addition to our family for seven years. God told us to wait at that time, and in October 2021 He handpicked our newest addition: Sierra. She joins her aussiedoodle “brother,” and they seem to get along really well. She’s smart, wants to learn, energetic but cuddly and is a wonderful new family member. Her nickname is “Jello” because she melts right into you when you pick her up. She’s going to be big though, if you look at the size of her paws, so it’ll be interesting how much longer we can carry her around!

I used to struggle with finding joy in my work because I have the heart of a stay at home mom. However, I am truly grateful for my many bosses, I enjoy the variety of what I do and even the challenges that help me grow and develop my skills. I enjoy the people I’ve met and while I’m busier than I’d like (I’m prayfully talking to God about how to change that going into 2022), I am grateful for understanding bosses and my flexible schedule which allows me to pick up our son from school every day.

While I still don’t completely know the path God has planned regarding my ministry, He has been revealing more and more. And while the unknown can be scary or cause worry, I am choosing joy in the moment – joy in each article or blog or book I get to write, joy in the podcast that Kara Hunt and I began at the beginning of this year, joy in the connections I make with people God puts on my path, and joy in the journey.

Joy in the moments I get to spend with extended family. There is no guarantee of tomorrow for any of us, and I want to live a life of no regrets. God has been gently reminding me of the blessing of relationships. In 2016, He told me to stop writing and invest that time in my family. I think it was to teach me to slow down and take time for the people I love. I have tried to remain intentional about keeping family first, choosing not to be swept up in the overwhelmingly busyness of life. There is a time to work hard and there is also a time to play… and playing can be quite fun.

What are some of the “bigs” in your life that bring joy?

Speak Now by Chautona Havig for CELEBRATE LIT BLOG TOUR

About the Book

Book: Speak Now

Author: Chautona Havig

Genre: Fiction / Christian / Romance

Release date: May 30, 2013

Some say you only love once. They’re wrong.

Ask Jonathan Lyman. Still grieving for his wife, he walks into that wedding with no idea his entire life is about to change. It was just supposed to be a simple—oh, who am I kidding? It was supposed to be a typical, lavish, family wedding.

But there’s nothing typical about falling in love with a woman walking down the aisle. So to speak.

Cara Laas is falling hard and fast for a man whose heart doesn’t want to let go of the past and is rushing to meet her in the present. At the same time. That she’s half in love with his children doesn’t help, either.

Their attraction may be their undoing, but is either ready for “till death do us part?”

She’s a master at making others comfortable. He’s never comfortable talking, but if he wants her heart, he’s going to have to speak—now sooner than later, if you don’t mind.

All New Cover, All New Edits, Same Great Story?

The article condemned the overuse of dialogue. I did a bit of research, and my heart sank. It seemed dialogue was out. Lyrical prose was in. Great. Just what I needed.

I write a decidedly dialogue-driven story. Always have.

Every time I tried to shift character discussions into narrative, my prose took a nose-dive into a tank of boring info-dumping. Blech. Those characters wanted to talk. They didn’t want me to tell readers what they wanted to say. They wanted me to let them tell their story as they lived it.

Characters can be pretty demanding.

Then Jonathan stepped up. He didn’t talk—didn’t want to talk. In fact, he didn’t like it. Refused to do it. And yet… how could he hope to get to know a woman who fascinated him if he didn’t at least ask questions to get her to carry most of the conversation.

Research says that if you gaze into someone’s eyes for four minutes, you’ll develop a strong bond with that person. I suspect that’s what “love at first sight” is. Two people who foolishly keep gazing into a stranger’s eyes long enough to form that bond. Or something.

I also suspect that’s what happened to Jonathan that night.

So here I had a character who did not like to talk. And aside from self-absorbed people, most of us don’t like to carry an entire conversation alone, so the woman he met that night, Cara, wouldn’t enjoy chatting all by herself all night.

Look, I tried to make it less dialogue-driven and not all info-dumpy. I tried to keep it an engaging read without so much discussion. But the dialogue refused to go away. It wanted its place. It needed to be there.

So I caved, certain I was going to be a mediocre writer for the rest of my life.

I hated that book for so long. In fact, I never intended to publish it. Why would I put something out there so very bad? The articles, books, videos—all the things I’d read said I was doing something wrong.

Except one friend. Michele loved the story—begged for new installments. Pleaded with me to finish it. So, I did. For her. I published it, even. Only for her. And you know what? I still hated it.

Despite that book having the best scene I’ve ever written in it.

No joke. There’s a scene in there that I’m always amazed to realize that I wrote. It’s powerful and raw and oh, so poignant. And yes, there are words in it—spoken words by my characters.

A few years passed. I still didn’t like the book. In my mind, it was a failure.

Then someone said something to me one day. “You are so good at dialogue.”

Later, someone else said it again. And later, I heard it again. Here I’d spent all this time and frustration fighting against one of my biggest writing strengths. Because some article made me question the best way to write. When I did searches on writing good dialogue, guess what? I found rebuttal arguments that included references to books I loved. Oops.

To say my eyes opened, and I saw something new in that story might be overkill. If anything, I assumed that meant it was as bad as I thought.

I felt certain that was why I didn’t like that book. It didn’t have “my” dialogue. So I reread it, determined to figure out if I should rewrite the whole thing with more.

Know what I discovered? I like the book.

Okay, Speak Now may never make my top-ten favorites of the books I’ve written. In fact, I guarantee it won’t.

But it won’t make the bottom ten anymore, either. In fact, it’s closer to top than bottom these days. And now it has a new cover, which I’m sure my daughter is pleased about. As the photographer for my original cover, she hated how I blew out the highlights on it. I loved the effect for that book, but with new editing, a few dialogue changes, and of course, that scene I love so much (and one tiny subplot that I never explored well changed for something else), it needed a new cover. And so I have it now. Introducing Speak Now 2.0. I’m so excited to share this book with the world.

My Review of Speak Now:

I love the premise of this book. I love how this author thinks outside the box and runs with it. She creates whole stories and characters and subplots and themes outside the box and it works for her. I also love how I never know what I’m going to get when I pick up one of these author’s book. She always delivers with funny characters and Christ-centered themes, but the storylines? She always keeps people guessing and coming back for more. Me included.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit but was not under any obligation to write a review. All opinions are strictly mine.
