I heard this song by Phil Wickham for the first time this fall. Maybe it was because I hadn’t been to a concert in a few years and had missed seeing like-minded believers raising their voice in song all together. Maybe it was because I was in a low season in my life and wanting desperately to hear from God. Maybe it was something else entirely, but this song really spoke to me, all the way down to my soul.
As I listened to the words of this powerful song, I was envisioning Heaven and what it would be like when we finally get there.
“And on that day, we join the resurrection
And stand beside the heroes of the faith
With one voice, a thousand generations
Sing, ‘Worthy is the lamb who was slain’”
I’m not sure why it hit me so hard that night, maybe because we were standing in a group of people praising God, but someday, when we get to Heaven, we will be walking around with the “heroes of the faith.” Moses, Abraham, Noah, David, Joseph, Ruth, Esther, the disciples, the Apostle Paul, and many more.
A few weeks later I was having a conversation with two friends who read the Bible with me on a regular basis. The topic of meeting some of the people we’re reading about came up, and it got me thinking once again about what Heaven will be like.
Always in the past when I thought of Heaven, I thought about being reunited with my family and friends, meeting our baby that died, and of course being with Jesus and our Heavenly Father.
I had never really had a desire to meet the “heroes of the faith” before because I have always looked at it from an earthly perspective. David intimidates me because he has a warrior/fighter personality. Paul intimidates me because he is passionate, on fire for God and nothing stops him. Yet, when we get to Heaven, all earthly, sinful personality traits will be gone (no more fear or intimidation for example) and instead we will simply be happy to talk to everyone, meet these people we were introduced to in the Bible, and spend hours listening to their testimonies. They might even listen to ours and the best part is we will all be giving all the glory to God.
When I think about it from that perspective, all I can say is “Wow!”
Phil Wickham’s song, Hymn of Heaven, began that conversation for me and grew an even greater excitement for me about my eternity in Heaven.
